Back Story:

East of the Sun and West of the Moon

A poor girl trades her hand in marriage to a great white bear, who turns out to be an enchanted prince — himself trapped under a troll queen's spell, cursed to be a bear by day and a man only by night. All is well until curiosity gets the better of her: one night she lights a candle to see his face, and three drops of tallow fall, waking him and breaking the fragile magic. He vanishes, bound now to marry the troll princess instead, in a castle that lies impossibly far away — east of the sun and west of the moon.

Undeterred, she sets out after him, walking further than any story usually asks of its heroine. She meets the winds themselves, who each carry her a little closer, until the fiercest of them all — the North Wind — blows her the rest of the way. There, through wit rather than magic, she outsmarts the troll princess and breaks the curse for good.

A tale less about waiting to be rescued, and more about being the one who does the rescuing.
